Can SanDisk Replicate Micron's Success in the AI Era?

When analyzing memory semiconductors, a few names typically dominate the conversation: Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron. Especially with the rapid expansion of the AI era, Micron has undergone a significant market revaluation, almost as if it were a completely different company. Recently, however, another name has been gaining immense momentum within this structural trend: SanDisk (SNDK).
Historically known for consumer storage devices like USB drives, HDDs, and SSDs, SanDisk is experiencing a profound identity shift. The market is now recognizing the company as a critical memory infrastructure provider reappearing in the AI data center era, powered by its NAND capabilities, enterprise SSDs, and next-generation High Bandwidth Flash (HBF). The stock price has also demonstrated exceptional strength.
Consequently, investors are asking one key question: Can SanDisk grow like Micron?
Explosive Earnings and Margin Expansion
The reasoning behind SanDisk's recent growth trajectory is straightforward: its earnings experienced explosive growth.
SanDisk’s recent FY2026 third-quarter revenue reached $5.95 billion, representing a 97% sequential increase and a 251% year-over-year expansion. That is an extraordinary growth rate.
Even more notable is the company’s profitability. Its gross margin reached 78.4%. Historically, NAND-focused companies were viewed as businesses heavily impacted by industry cyclicality. Today, SanDisk is demonstrating a structurally distinct margin profile, supported by high-value customers and surging AI infrastructure demand.
At the core of this transformation is the data center segment. SanDisk’s FY2026 Q3 data center revenue reached $1.467 billion, an impressive 233% increase quarter-over-quarter and up 645% year-over-year.
This dynamic naturally invites comparisons to Micron. While Micron is a comprehensive memory provider—spanning DRAM, HBM, and NAND—its recent AI growth narrative has been heavily centered on HBM and data center DRAM. SanDisk, conversely, is predominantly focused on NAND and flash memory. For SanDisk to achieve a Micron-like growth trajectory, NAND must evolve beyond a traditional storage medium to capture a higher-value position within AI architectures. One potential catalyst for this evolution is HBF, a technology SanDisk is actively pioneering.
Analyzing SanDisk’s Future Roadmap
SanDisk’s strategic roadmap can be divided into four core pillars.
1. Expanding Data Center SSDs
SanDisk’s most realistic growth engine is data center SSDs. AI data centers require more than just filling server racks with GPUs; they demand storage devices capable of housing massive datasets, executing rapid read operations, and processing workloads reliably.
SanDisk is spearheading this strategy with enterprise NVMe SSD products such as the SN861, SN655, and SN670. The SN861 is engineered as a high-performance, low-latency SSD optimized for AI and server environments. Meanwhile, the SN670 is an UltraQLC-based, high-capacity enterprise SSD that scales up to 122.88TB. SanDisk is strategically positioning itself to sell high-performance, high-capacity SSDs spanning the entire data cycle of AI data centers.
Strength: The primary catalyst is that the addressable market is rapidly opening. As the AI inference market scales, demand for read-intensive, high-performance SSDs could grow substantially.
Weakness: The enterprise SSD landscape is extremely competitive, featuring players like Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Micron, Kioxia, and YMTC. Should the industry shift into oversupply, SanDisk could also face significant headwinds.
2. BiCS8 NAND and UltraQLC
BiCS is the 3D NAND architecture developed collaboratively over a long period by SanDisk and Kioxia. The latest iteration, BiCS8, delivers enhanced density, performance, and efficiency. SanDisk is combining this with UltraQLC to aggressively target the high-capacity SSD market.
While QLC technology may face trade-offs in durability and speed, it offers distinct advantages in capacity and cost-efficiency. In AI data centers, not all data requires the ultra-fast speeds of HBM; cost-effective, high-capacity storage for massive datasets is equally vital. This is precisely where UltraQLC proves its value.
Strength: If SanDisk successfully captures the high-capacity enterprise SSD market via its cost and capacity advantages, its data center revenue could experience structural, sustained growth.
Weakness: Enterprise customers prioritize durability and stability—areas where QLC has historical limitations. SanDisk must definitively prove that its UltraQLC products are reliable, long-term AI storage solutions.
3. High Bandwidth Flash (HBF)
This represents both the most compelling and highest-risk element of SanDisk’s product roadmap. Simply put, HBF is a next-generation memory technology based on NAND flash, engineered to deliver significantly higher bandwidth than traditional SSDs.
The market need is evident: HBM is exceptionally fast but carries high costs and capacity expansion limitations. Conversely, traditional SSDs provide massive capacity but lack HBM-level speeds. HBF targets the empty performance gap between these two technologies, proposing a new memory layer specifically tailored for AI inference.
Strength: If HBF achieves widespread adoption, SanDisk’s market status could transform completely. Securing a position within the AI server architecture would allow SanDisk to be revalued as a foundational AI memory pioneer, rather than purely a NAND company.
Weakness: The technology remains in the early stages of validation. Technological promise does not guarantee immediate commercial adoption. Even if successful, HBF is more likely to serve as a complementary new layer between HBM and SSDs rather than an outright replacement for HBM.
4. A New Business Model (NBM)
Another pivotal change SanDisk has presented is its New Business Model (NBM), focused heavily on long-term customer contracts. The company reported securing three NBM contracts as of the end of FY2026 Q3, and added two additional contracts in Q4.
This strategy aims to mitigate pricing cycles, one of the memory industry's most prominent vulnerabilities. By transitioning from a volume-driven, low-cost commodity seller to a stable supplier of high-value products via long-term agreements, SanDisk is attempting to structurally de-risk its revenue.
Strength: Successful execution of this strategy could drastically improve earnings stability. If a memory company can successfully mute cyclical volatility, its valuation multiple can fundamentally expand.
Weakness: A key question remains: Can long-term contracts truly protect the company from severe price declines? While NBM is a highly positive direction, its actual defensive capabilities will ultimately be tested during the next industry downturn.
The Bull Case for SanDisk
Could SanDisk legitimately grow to a level comparable to Micron? It is entirely possible, supported by clear market logic:
- AI Storage Demand Could Grow Structurally: While early AI infrastructure investments focused heavily on GPUs and HBM, the transition from AI training to AI inference will elevate the importance of storage. Large-scale models from companies such as Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic require continuous data loading, reading, and retrieval. Furthermore, developments in RAG, vector databases, video and voice AI, multimodal models, and personalized AI will amplify this data storage demand.
- NAND Price Increases and Product Mix Improvement: SanDisk’s recent strength was driven by both volume growth and improved pricing dynamics, alongside an increasing share of high-value enterprise customers. Continued expansion in data center SSDs can drive further margin expansion.
- HBF Alters Corporate Identity: HBF is SanDisk’s most critical option. If it establishes itself as a standardized memory layer in AI architectures, SanDisk would elevate its position to become a critical infrastructure supplier for AI inference—a status highly comparable to Micron.
- A Robust Financial Structure: During its recent earnings announcement, management emphasized the company's robust financial footing, operating nearly debt-free with substantial cash generation capabilities. Additionally, active share repurchase programs provide a strong floor of support for the stock price.
The Bear Case for SanDisk
However, all investments carry risk, and SanDisk faces several notable headwinds:
- NAND Remains a Cyclical Industry: Fundamentally, NAND is a highly volatile business. Current supply constraints and booming AI demand are driving explosive margins, but sustaining this profitability requires flawless supply discipline—a strategy no company has permanently mastered.
- HBF Expectation Risks: The market has already priced a significant portion of HBF’s potential into the stock. If commercial adoption is delayed or slower than anticipated, the stock could face severe instability. HBF acts as a rocket engine for the valuation, but for now, the fuel is still being loaded, and successful ignition remains to be seen.
- China’s YMTC Risk: While DRAM and HBM boast steep barriers to entry, NAND is generally considered an area where Chinese competitors can catch up more rapidly. China's YMTC is swiftly advancing its technology and production capacity, posing a credible long-term supply risk.
- Stretched Valuations: A great company and a great stock are not always synonymous. SanDisk's equity has already experienced a massive run-up, and the market is officially pricing it as an AI NAND winner. Moving forward, the company must execute flawlessly to justify further multiple expansion.

SanDisk is undergoing a fascinating corporate evolution. Even during periods of Nasdaq volatility earlier this year, SanDisk remained a notable outlier. It has successfully shed its legacy consumer storage identity, emerging as a critical flash memory provider targeting data storage and the inference memory layer in the AI era.
So, can SanDisk grow like Micron? The potential exists, but the mechanism is fundamentally different. While Micron leads the front lines of AI memory with HBM and DRAM, SanDisk is strategically targeting the structural gaps in AI storage and inference infrastructure with NAND and HBF.

- The actual pace of customer adoption for HBF.

SanDisk has officially stepped onto a path where it could rival Micron's growth story. However, it is not the HBM path; it is a unique trajectory relying on NAND and HBF becoming recognized as a new, standardized layer of AI infrastructure.
